Curious Case of a Burglar Using a Waymo for a Yoga Clothes Heist in San Francisco

In a bizarre and curious case that unfolded earlier this year in San Francisco, a burglar utilized a Waymo self-driving vehicle to carry out a theft at a popular yoga studio. According to reports by the San Francisco Chronicle, the incident took place last January, but police have yet to apprehend the perpetrator.

The peculiar aspect of this case lies in how Waymo handles the vast amount of data it collects from its vehicles. While Waymo does indeed capture and store ride footage, there is still uncertainty about the duration for which such data is retained. The Chronicle's report reveals that by the time a search warrant was filed in April, the relevant data had already been deleted or otherwise removed.

Adding an intriguing twist to the story, police were unable to identify the thief through the exterior camera footage of the Waymo vehicle due to privacy concerns. As for the interior cameras and any potential account information, these also failed to provide valuable leads, leaving investigators stumped.

The incident began when a burglar hailed a Waymo ride to a yoga studio called Hot 8 Yoga. Once inside, they proceeded to take what they wanted before returning to the vehicle and leaving with their stolen goods. This entire process was captured on video by both the yoga studio's security system and the Waymo car's own cameras.

However, despite having access to all this footage, police were unable to make any significant progress in identifying the suspect. The search warrant turned up no leads from either the ride data or the Waymo account information. This case raises questions about the balance between privacy and public safety when it comes to self-driving cars.
