Wing, the innovative drone delivery service owned by Alphabet (now Google), is making a significant push into more American cities as it partners with Walmart. The expansion aims to cover over 270 Walmart locations across the U.S. within the next year. Seven new markets have been added: Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City. This brings Wing’s operational footprint to nearly 20 U.S. cities, including existing ones like Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Greater Houston, Orlando, Tampa, Charlotte, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Miami.
The collaboration with Walmart marks a substantial commitment from both companies. After successful trials in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta, Wing and Walmart have expanded their drone-delivery network to 150 additional stores. This move signifies that same-day delivery through drones is no longer just a fleeting novelty but a reliable service relied upon by many customers.
According to Wing’s Chief Business Officer, Heather Rivera, more than one million commercial deliveries have been completed through their partnership with Walmart. Moreover, the top 25% of customers use the drone delivery service three times a week. Rivera highlighted that, 'Our work with Walmart has shown that drone delivery isn’t just a novelty; it’s a service many customers count on multiple times per week.'
The expansion into these new cities is part of Wing’s broader strategy to build an extensive network of autonomous drone deliveries. As the technology matures and gains acceptance, it could revolutionize last-mile logistics in the retail sector.
