Elon Musk's xAI has recently come under scrutiny for running nearly 50 natural gas turbines at its Mississippi data center. This development has raised concerns as the state of Mississippi is currently not regulating these power plants, thanks to a loophole that allows them to be classified as 'mobile' and thus dodge air pollution rules.
According to reports, these turbines are being operated on flatbed trailers, allowing xAI to claim they are mobile for one year. However, the NAACP, which has filed a lawsuit on behalf of local residents, argues that this classification is inappropriate and is worsening air quality in an already polluted region.
This week, the NAACP asked the court for an injunction against xAI. The Southern Environmental Law Center, representing the NAACP, claims that these turbines are being operated in violation of federal law. Specifically, they argue that power plants mounted on trailers should still be considered stationary and subject to air pollution regulations.
xAI has been granted permits for 15 of its turbines, but a Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce press release from May 2025 stated that 'about half' of the 35 then-in-operation turbines would remain on site. However, xAI continues to expand operations. Currently, it is operating 46 gas turbines, according to a local news report.
The situation highlights the complex interplay between technological advancement and environmental concerns. As more companies like xAI continue to rely heavily on data centers, questions about their impact on local ecosystems and air quality are bound to arise.
