WhatsApp Gets Ready for Private AI Chats: Incognito Mode With Meta AI

Meta has announced a groundbreaking feature that will soon land on WhatsApp: an incognito mode for its Meta AI chatbot. This new addition is designed to give users the ability to have private, secure conversations with AI without any trace of their interactions being visible or stored.

The Feature in Detail

To initiate an incognito session, you'll tap on a dedicated icon when engaging in one-on-one chats with Meta AI. This feature will also be available on the stand-alone Meta AI app. According to Meta, these incognito conversations are temporary and won't be saved or stored by the company.

The company emphasizes that once you close the chat, any messages sent during that session will disappear automatically. Additionally, if you lock your phone or exit the app, the incognito session will end, ensuring no context is retained for future reference.

Why Incognito Mode Matters

Alice Newton-Rex, Vice President of Product at WhatsApp, explains that people are increasingly turning to AI for private and sensitive inquiries. Whether it's financial advice, health concerns, or responses to challenging social situations, Meta sees the need for users to have a secure space where they can explore these topics without fear.

“We believe it’s essential to provide users with the ability to ask these questions in as private an environment as possible,” said Newton-Rex during a call with TechCrunch.

Beyond WhatsApp: Meta's Commitment to Privacy

This isn't just a one-off feature for WhatsApp. Meta has been working on secure AI chat infrastructure for some time. Last year, the company detailed its private processing architecture, which allows it to develop AI features without breaking end-to-end encryption.

According to Newton-Rex, the new incognito chats are powered by Muse Spark, a cutting-edge model released last month. Meta is already planning to build on this success with an upcoming feature called Side Chat, which will allow users to privately ask questions within group chats.

Competition and Privacy Concerns

While Meta's move towards private AI chats is significant, it’s worth noting that other platforms like ChatGPT and Claude also offer incognito modes. Companies such as DuckDuckGo and Proton have launched their own privacy-focused chatbots.

Meta's decision to introduce this feature comes at a crucial time, especially following reports that users' AI conversations could be used against them in legal proceedings.
