The world of tech is abuzz with details about Anthropic's management structure after Dario Amodei, CEO of this rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) company, revealed his surprisingly lean executive team in an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang. Founded less than five years ago and now valued at a staggering trillion dollars by private market investors, Anthropic has managed to maintain a highly unusual organizational setup that sets it apart from many of its peers.
Amodei disclosed that he has just one direct report: his chief of staff. In contrast, the typical executive structure in tech companies often sees CEOs with several direct reports overseeing different departments. This arrangement allows Amodei to focus almost entirely on strategy, company culture, and research direction while his sister, co-founder and President Daniela Amodei, handles day-to-day operations.
This unique setup is highly unusual in the tech industry, where leaders often have multiple direct reports. For example, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, which is more common. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, another notable outlier, manages an even larger team with many dozens of direct reports.
Amodei's approach to management not only showcases his trust in his sister but also highlights the potential benefits of having fewer layers between him and the company's day-to-day operations. This structure could enable faster decision-making and a more streamlined organizational flow, though it remains to be seen how well this model scales as Anthropic continues to grow.
