Jeff Bezos’s Prometheus Raises $12B: Building the Future with Artificial General Engineers

Prometheus, the cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) startup co-founded by Amazon's former CEO Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj, the brains behind Google’s Verily life sciences unit, has just closed a massive $12 billion funding round. This latest investment brings Prometheus' total valuation to an impressive $41 billion.

The new funds are coming from a star-studded list of investors including Jeff Bezos himself, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock. This is the second fundraising round for Prometheus since its launch late last year with an initial raise of $6.2 billion, according to CNBC.

Revolutionizing Manufacturing

Prometheus' ambitious goal is to develop what it calls an 'artificial general engineer.' This software would automate the design and manufacturing of complex physical systems—from jet engines to drug compounds. The vision is to replace a significant portion of traditional engineering work with AI, transforming how we approach innovation and production.

Bezos’ Vision for the Future

In an interview with CNBC, Jeff Bezos highlighted his optimistic view on the impact of this technology. 'Significant productivity in the economy is going to raise the standard of living,' he stated. 'People who today have two-earner households will become one-earner households.' This perspective contrasts sharply with some predictions that AI could lead to widespread job losses.

Scaling Up

Prometheus currently employs around 150 people across offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich. While the specifics of their current projects are under wraps, Bezos hinted that a significant portion of the capital will be allocated toward meeting the company's large compute needs.
