Notion Embraces AI Agents: A New Era of Collaborative Workspaces

Productivity software giant Notion has just taken a significant leap into the future by unveiling a groundbreaking new platform that brings artificial intelligence (AI) agents directly into the heart of collaborative workspaces. This move signals a major shift in how teams manage their workflows, integrating both custom and external AI tools to enhance productivity.

Custom Agents Get an Upgrade

In February, Notion introduced Custom Agents—AI teammates designed to handle repetitive tasks like answering FAQs, compiling status updates, and automating workflows. Since then, over one million agents have been built by Notion's customers. However, these tools had limitations: they couldn’t connect with external data sources or use custom logic outside the platform.

New Features for Seamless Integration

Now, with its new Workers, Notion is providing a cloud-based environment where teams can deploy their own custom code. This means developers can write and run logic within a secure sandbox, syncing external data into Notion databases or building custom tools without needing to rely on third-party infrastructure.

The Workers feature also introduces database sync capabilities, allowing users to pull in real-time data from APIs of popular platforms like Salesforce, Zendesk, Postgres, and more. This integration makes it easier for teams to keep their Notion databases up-to-date with the latest information from various sources.

Connecting External Agents

A key aspect of this new platform is its ability to connect external AI agents. Notion’s users can now chat directly with these agents, assign them tasks, and track progress as if they were one of Notion's own custom agents. Currently, supported partner agents include Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon. For those looking for deeper integration, the External Agent API allows teams to connect their own internal agents specifically built for company needs.

Developer-Friendly Tools

To make all of this accessible, Notion has introduced a Developer Platform. This platform is controlled via the Notion CLI (Command-Line Interface) and is available on the Business and Enterprise plans. The Developer Platform represents a significant shift in strategy for Notion, positioning it as more than just an application but a programmable platform that can compete with other workflow automation solutions.

“Any data, any tool, any agent—that's the big picture for the Notion Developer Platform,” stated Ivan Zhao, co-founder and CEO of Notion. This move sets up Notion to be a core infrastructure solution in an increasingly automated business environment where knowledge work needs to be managed efficiently.
