Smartphones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives, but they often come with a downside: the constant stream of notifications and apps can be overwhelming. Enter Poppy, a new AI assistant designed to help you navigate through the chaos.
The Problem
With so many apps vying for your attention, it's easy to get lost in the sea of information. Poppy aims to solve this by consolidating all your important tasks and notifications into a single, user-friendly dashboard. The idea is that 'Poppy pays attention so you don’t have to,' making your digital life more manageable.
How It Works
To get started with Poppy, users can connect various services like their email, calendar, and location data. Once connected, the app uses AI to analyze this information and provide personalized suggestions based on what’s happening in your life right now.
Proactive Suggestions
For instance, if Poppy detects a 30-minute gap between meetings while you're near a park, it might suggest taking a walk to clear your mind. Or, if you’ve mentioned dietary preferences in previous communications with friends, Poppy could recommend a restaurant for brunch.
The Visionary Behind Poppy
Poppy’s creator, Sai Kambampati, has always been fascinated by human-computer interaction. With a master's degree in computer science and experience at AI hardware startup Humane, he saw the potential for proactive computing. 'I've always been interested in challenging what computers are able to do, especially the idea of ambient computing,' says Kambampati.
Supported Apps and Data Security
At launch, Poppy works with popular apps like Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Gmail, Outlook, iCloud Mail, Apple Health, Reminders, Contacts, iMessage, WhatsApp, Uber, and Instacart. While it uses a Mac app to access iMessage, this could be a potential issue as Apple generally doesn’t allow third-party apps to access its messaging service.
Poppy ensures user data is encrypted when stored in its database and has a zero-retention policy for cloud-based LLMs used for suggestions. However, Kambampati envisions a future where all these processes can run locally on devices as technology advances.
A Bright Future
With backing from Kindred Ventures and various angels, including DeepMind's Logan Kilpatrick, Poppy is well-positioned to revolutionize the way we interact with our smartphones. As Kambampati envisions, within two to three years, all these functionalities could run on-device, making your digital life even more seamless.
