Google Unveils Rambler: AI-Powered Dictation Feature for Gboard—A Game-Changer for Android Users?

At its Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event, Google unveiled a new AI-powered voice dictation feature called Rambler. This latest addition to Gboard, the widely used Android keyboard app, marks a significant move in direct competition with established players like Wispr Flow and Typeless. Rambler promises to enhance user experience by removing filler words, understanding mid-sentence corrections, and supporting code switching between languages.

Rambler's Key Features:

  • Removes filler words like “ums” and “ahs.”
  • Understands mid-sentence corrections, such as “I am going to meet you on Wednesday at our usual coffee shop at 3 p.m. … um, 2 p.m.”
  • Supports code switching between languages, allowing users to seamlessly switch from one language to another within a sentence.
  • Indicates when the Rambler feature is in use and does not store any voice recordings.
  • Uses audio input only for transcription purposes.

According to Ben Greenwood, director of Android Core Experiences, Google has invested significantly in ensuring that features like Rambler are both safe and private. He highlighted the use of a combination of on-device and cloud-based processing methods to address privacy concerns. This move is particularly strategic given the widespread adoption of Gboard across Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones.

Rambler will be initially rolled out for Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer, with plans to expand to other Android devices in the future. The core advantage here lies in distribution: Gboard is pre-installed on the vast majority of Android devices worldwide, meaning Rambler reaches hundreds of millions of users automatically.

The question now for dictation app startups is whether their offerings can match or surpass Rambler's capabilities. With a feature that understands and supports code switching—a capability that many Western apps have been slow to support—Rambler sets a high bar. For standalone dictation apps, the challenge lies in proving their worth beyond just being an alternative.
