Google’s annual I/O event recently took place virtually, unveiling an array of upcoming updates for Android users. Among the highlights are the introduction of Googlebooks, the launch of new widget capabilities, and advancements in Gemini Intelligence that promise a more personalized experience across devices.
New Googlebooks: Laptops Built with Gemini
Google has partnered with leading manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create a line of laptops called Googlebook. These devices are the first designed specifically for Gemini Intelligence, offering proactive assistance and personalization. Key features include:
- Magic Pointer: A cursor that integrates Gemini technology for enhanced precision.
- Compatibility with Android phones, enabling users to run apps directly on their laptop from their phone.
- The ability to create custom widgets using the Create My Widget feature, which allows users to define what they want through natural language commands.
Vibe-Coded Widgets and More Android Improvements
Google is also rolling out a new “Create My Widget” function that lets users personalize their home screen with widgets by describing them in plain language. This feature will launch on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, allowing for easy creation of dynamic dashboards.
Android Auto is also getting an upgrade with a more personalized experience, including the ability to add widgets that provide quick access to important information during navigation. Additionally, select cars will support 60 fps full HD video playback from apps like YouTube, enhancing the in-car entertainment experience.
Gemini Integration Across Devices
Google announced that Gemini Intelligence is now more widely integrated into Android Auto. This allows drivers to engage with Gemini hands-free, ordering food or asking questions about topics while driving safely. The company also introduced the ability for users to place orders from DoorDash directly from their car.
3D Emoji updates are coming later this year, refining all 4,000 Android emojis to feel more realistic and expressive. This enhancement aims to make text messages and social media posts even more vivid and engaging.
Enhanced Features for Creators
Gemini in Chrome is now available on Android after earlier releases on iOS and desktop. It enables users to summarize content, ask questions about web pages, and even auto-browse websites to complete tasks like booking tickets.
A new “Screen Reactions” feature, which records both the user and their screen simultaneously, is set to launch this summer on Pixel devices. Google also partnered with Meta for Instagram features such as Ultra HDR, native stabilization, and night mode, ensuring sharpness in photos and videos.
Improved Security and User Experience
Google’s advanced Gemini agentic features, which allow the assistant to perform multistep tasks across apps based on user input, are expanding. For example, taking a photo of an event flyer can prompt the assistant to find that event online.
The company is also enhancing security with extended AirDrop support and improved threat-protection features. Users will now be able to pause distraction apps after 10 seconds, encouraging more productive time use. Additionally, Google is expanding default-on theft protections to all Android devices globally.
