Imagine tracking your AI usage with a tiny, animated dashboard that brings the fun of old-school gaming to your workday. That's exactly what the Clawdmeter offers—a playful way to monitor your Claude Code token consumption right from your desk.
The Birth of the Clawdmeter
Developed by Hermann Haraldsson, a software developer based in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Clawdmeter is more than just a tech gadget. It's a testament to how accessible and engaging AI development has become thanks to tools like Claude Code.
Hermann says he always wanted to play with embedded devices but never had the time until Claude helped him build this in just a few days. 'It’s really democratized access to programming, so that anyone can now do what developers used to do,' he notes. The majority of his time was spent on design, ensuring every detail—from fonts and colors to animations—was perfect.
How It Works
The Clawdmeter uses a small lithium-ion battery-powered display like the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-2.16, which pairs with your laptop over Bluetooth. When you turn it on, you're greeted by pixel-art animations of the Clawd sprite that get busier as your usage rate increases. You can even cycle through different types of animations using a middle button.
Pressing this button again displays simple charts showing your session and weekly Claude utilization data. Two side buttons send Space and Shift+Tab over Bluetooth for voice mode and mode-toggle shortcuts, allowing you to switch between Normal, Accept Edits, Plan Mode, and Auto Mode.
The Open-Source Magic
Because the Clawdmeter is an open-source project, anyone can customize it. Hermann was surprised by its popularity, with over 800 stars on GitHub since its May 10 launch and 50 forks for personal development. The device's nostalgic appeal—akin to a hardware Tamagotchi for your context window—appeals to many.
Why It Matters
The Clawdmeter isn't just about fun; it’s also a symbol of the growing interest in maximizing AI token usage, often referred to as 'tokenmaxxing.' As one Reddit user joked, 'At this point, Anthropic should just mail these to us for free.' Another suggested adding a button to top up tokens using your card on file. (Ha, that could be dangerous!)
For developers and AI enthusiasts, the Clawdmeter offers a unique way to stay engaged with their tools while keeping an eye on their usage limits.
