Anthropic Files for IPO: The Race to Go Public in AI

Anthropic, the powerhouse behind the popular AI chatbot Claude, is taking a significant step in its journey towards becoming a publicly traded company. The AI lab has filed confidentially for an initial public offering (IPO), as announced in a blog post on Monday.

The move comes after Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round, pushing its valuation to nearly $965 billion. This latest development places Anthropic at the forefront of the AI industry's race for public recognition and capital, just as its main rival, OpenAI, continues to make headlines with its own fundraising efforts.

Unlike SpaceX’s ambitious IPO plans targeting a $2 trillion valuation, Anthropic is still in the confidential filing phase. This allows the company to prepare without disclosing detailed financial information or other internal business details publicly. However, if it proceeds as planned, Anthropic will eventually file an S-1 registration document containing comprehensive financial data and risk assessments.

OpenAI, which raised $122 billion in a recent funding round valued at over $850 billion, is also preparing for its IPO. This sets the stage for what could be a competitive showdown between two of the largest AI labs in the world, testing market interest and resolve in this fast-growing sector.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has since grown from an underdog to a formidable player. The company’s focus on enterprise services has led to significant revenue growth, with its revenue run-rate surpassing $47 billion, up from just $9 billion at the end of last year.

One of Anthropic's key initiatives is the Mythos model, which was previewed in April but remains restricted. The company recently informed software developers that Mythos has discovered thousands of high-severity bugs and is not yet ready for public release. However, Anthropic plans to make it more widely available soon.

Another notable move by Anthropic is its collaboration with the European Union’s cybersecurity agency, where the lab will provide access to Mythos. This strategic partnership could further solidify Anthropic's position in the AI landscape and demonstrate the model's potential for critical applications.
