Are you someone who saves everything online but struggles to find it later? X is stepping up the game with their latest History tab, making it easier than ever to manage and revisit your favorite content.
Initially available on iOS, this update from X's head of product, Nikita Bier, describes the History tab as a smarter way to keep track of your saved bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles. The new feature is designed to help users return to things they want to finish or explore further.
Previously, the Bookmarks button in X’s left-side menu has been renamed History. This page introduces a clean layout with four distinct tabs: Bookmarks, Likes, Videos, and Articles. Each tab categorizes your content based on whether you've intentionally saved it or X has recommended it for you. For instance, the Articles section automatically populates with content you’ve engaged with while scrolling through the app.
Bier emphasizes that the History section is private to each user, ensuring your saved items remain confidential and personalized. This move gives X a more web-browser-like feel, allowing users to revisit their past reading and viewing history without explicitly saving every item.
The update also consolidates features previously scattered throughout the app. Bookmarks were already in the main menu, while likes were hidden under your user profile. Now, everything is conveniently grouped together, making it easier to manage and navigate through your saved content.
X’s move towards a History tab aligns with their strategy of promoting long-form articles as an alternative to the platform's 280-character limit posts. By encouraging users to track articles they find interesting during scrolling, X aims to create personalized news feeds within the app itself.
This update comes at a time when web publishers are seeing reduced referral traffic from platforms like Facebook and Google due to changing algorithms and AI-driven experiences that reduce clicks to external sites. X sees this as an opportunity to attract more creators and businesses to write directly on their platform, offering built-in distribution and discovery features.
