Venmo is undergoing a major makeover that promises to make the app more useful, social, and easier to navigate. This redesign marks the peer-to-peer payments platform's biggest refresh since 2021, and it couldn't come at a more interesting time.

The timing of this update is noteworthy because PayPal, which owns Venmo, is restructuring its business to spin off Venmo as a standalone entity. This move is widely seen as laying the groundwork for a potential sale. With reports suggesting that Stripe has expressed interest in buying PayPal outright, a fresh look for Venmo could be seen as more than just routine updates.

Redesign Details

The redesign will roll out this week and continue over the next few months, with full availability expected by fall. One of the first changes users will notice is the revamped feed. Gone are the simple lists; instead, you'll see a wider variety of visuals and larger images, along with more ways to respond to payments like reactions and quick action buttons such as “Pay Again” and “Say Thanks.”

The new feed will also be more personalized, surfacing tailored cashback offers from brands you shop from and product suggestions based on previous purchases. Venmo is also introducing a “Give a Shoutout” button under payments in the feed, allowing users to endorse their favorite local businesses directly through the app.

New Tabs

In addition to these changes, two new tabs will launch: “Send” and “Money.” The Send tab features your most frequent contacts prominently, making it easier to split bills with up to 30 people. You can also send gifts and schedule payments here. The Money tab is where you'll manage expenses, access Teen Accounts, and Crypto services.

A new Rewards tab will pull all limited-time offers into one place, including Venmo's Stash program, which gives users up to 5% cash back when shopping with favorite brands in the app. This money is deposited directly to their Venmo Mastercard Debit Card.

User Insights and Future Trends

Venmo’s senior vice president and general manager, Alexis Sowa, explained that the redesign came from a year of user research. One of the biggest insights was how many features customers just didn't know existed in the app. The update reflects a broader trend where younger users expect payment apps to be more social platforms rather than just utility tools.

Apps like Verse and Daylight offer features that let users keep up with their friends' spending behavior, while Revolut offers group bill splitting and in-app chat. Venmo's core audience increasingly wants to see and share financial activity the way they would on any other feed, and this redesign aims to meet those expectations before a potential new owner comes knocking.
