FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried has taken a significant step towards potentially reducing his prison sentence by filing for a pardon from President Trump, according to the Justice Department’s Pardon Attorney Office website. Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year sentence following his conviction on fraud and money laundering charges in 2024.
The application was first reported by Bloomberg News. This move comes amid a backdrop of President Trump's history of pardoning individuals, with hundreds of pardons granted during his second term. Among these were many for those involved in the January 6 riot and numerous white-collar criminals like Bankman-Fried.
President Trump has shown a pattern of granting pardons to individuals who have donated large sums to his political campaigns. However, very few of those he has pardoned followed the official process of applying with the Justice Department, according to Bloomberg.
