Instagram has just kicked off a global rollout of its new ‘Instants’ feature, bringing a fresh twist to the social media landscape with disappearing photos designed for candid moments among close friends. This exciting update aims to tap into the authenticity that users crave, much like Snapchat and BeReal have been doing.
The core concept behind Instants is straightforward: share unedited, one-time-use snapshots of your life with select people who can view them just once and only for 24 hours. This feature stands out from Instagram's usual polished content, instead focusing on quick, real-life shots that capture the essence of everyday moments.
To get started, you simply tap the mini photo stack in the bottom right corner of your Instagram inbox. From there, a new window opens where you can use Instagram’s built-in camera to snap away. Once shared, recipients can react with emojis and even send their own Instant back. But here's the twist: Instants are meant to be fleeting; once viewed or ignored, they vanish.
Meta is testing this format as a standalone app in certain regions like Spain and Italy too, showing its commitment to this feature. Instagram has promised that your shared Instants will be stored privately for up to one year. You can even compile them into a recap and post it to Instagram Stories. If you need to retract an Instant, the ‘undo’ button allows you to delete it from your archive before anyone has opened it.
While Instagram was initially designed as a platform for sharing with friends, it has evolved into a space dominated by influencer content and ads. With Instants, Meta seems to be stepping back towards more personal interactions. However, the timing might be tricky given that BeReal's popularity has waned, and many users already use Instagram Stories for their informal updates.
