How to Disable Instagram's New Instants Feature and Revoke Accidental Shares

Yesterday, Instagram introduced a fresh feature called 'Instants' designed for capturing and instantly sharing real-life moments with your friends. However, many users are now seeking ways to disable the feature after experiencing accidental photo sharing.

The Instants Feature Explained

When you first encounter the Instants section by tapping the mini photo stack in the bottom-right corner of your inbox, you'll be greeted with a brief introduction about the feature. The app highlights that Instants disappear over time, there's no public viewers list, and reactions are private. Despite these warnings, the process of capturing and sharing photos isn't always clear.

Upon opening the camera, you’ll see options to choose between 'Friends' and 'Close Friends.' By default, it’s set to 'Friends,' meaning the photo will be sent to everyone on your Friends list unless manually changed. This design can lead to accidental exposure of personal content if users aren’t aware.

How to Turn Off Instants

To disable the feature, go to your profile and tap on the three-line menu at the top right corner to access settings. Scroll down to 'Content Preferences' and toggle off the option labeled ‘Hide Instants in Inbox.’ Once you enable this setting, you won’t see any new or past Instants within your inbox.

Temporarily Stopping Instants

If you don't want to turn it off entirely but still wish to stop receiving new Instants temporarily, hold down the pile of instants in your inbox and swipe right. This action will pause the feature for a while until you manually reactivate it.

Retracting Accidental Shares

If you accidentally share an image using the Instants feature, there’s still hope to undo it quickly. An ‘Undo’ option appears beneath the shutter button immediately after capturing the photo. You can use this to retract the image before recipients see it.

Additionally, you have the option to delete the Instant from your archive. To do this, tap on the four-box icon located at the top right of the camera and select the Instant you want to unsend. This action will remove the photo from friends who haven’t yet opened it.
