Chinese spies have found a clever way to gather valuable intel: by posing as recruiters on popular job search sites, including LinkedIn. According to a joint advisory from the FBI, MI5, and governments of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, these agents are actively targeting Western workers with the aim of obtaining non-public information that could benefit Beijing.
The advisory highlights how Chinese military intelligence services seek strategic advantages by acquiring privileged military, political, and economic intelligence. They often target individuals who hold security clearances, work in the military, or have access to unclassified but potentially sensitive information like journalists and academics.
“Creating a fake account or misrepresenting your identity is a clear violation of our terms of service,” said a LinkedIn spokesperson to TechCrunch. “We remain focused on detecting state-sponsored abuse and will continue to enforce our policies against fake accounts.”
