7-Eleven Data Breach: Over 185,000 Customers' Personal Details Compromised

A shocking data breach has impacted 7-Eleven, one of the largest convenience store chains in the world. According to Have I Been Pwned, a service that alerts individuals when their personal information is involved in a hack, over 185,000 customers have had their personal details compromised.

The data breach was reported back in April and has now come to light with more details revealed. The affected customers' names, dates of birth, and physical addresses are among the sensitive information that hackers managed to access. Furthermore, phone numbers and email addresses were also part of the compromised data. In a chilling twist, it's been revealed that the ShinyHunters group claimed responsibility for the breach, stating they would release the stolen data if not paid.

More alarming details came from separate listings with Maine’s and Massachusetts’ attorney generals. These documents indicate that 7-Eleven's chief information security officer, Jim Kastle, confirmed that hackers gained access to an internal server containing important franchisee documents. The breach is even more concerning as it includes Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers of some customers.

What does this mean for you if you’re a 7-Eleven customer? First, check the Have I Been Pwned website to see if your information was affected. If so, update all your passwords immediately and monitor your financial statements for any unusual activity. It’s also advisable to consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports.
